How to use a “softphone" & diagnose WIFI

The performance and experience of a Mobile Softphones are heavily dependent on the
platform it sits on in terms of both signal strength and output. While circumstantial, generally
cabled devices are subject to less interference and performance issues in comparison to their
Wireless Equivalent. Please continue reading for a more in-depth information as to why below.

Preparation

We highly recommend running speed tests at intended frequent and semi frequent areas,
using apps such as the Ookla Speed Test app https://www.speedtest.net/apps.


This will help identify problem areas that needs to be addressed for a more seamless
experience. Solutions generally involve cabled Wireless Access Points to extend the reach of
a standard router, please check Wireless technology for more information.

Wi-Fi speeds may vary, depending on wall materials and router signal strength and coverage can be improved by Wi-Fi access points. Check out our FAQ below. 

 

While incredibly convenient Wireless technology is subject to external interference from

      1. Other 2.4 GHz devices – Cordless keyboard/mice, headphones, printers, wireless CCTV cameras, remote controllers, Bluetooth, or general broadcasting devices using the frequency
        1. 5 GHz while not as congested or overused (yet) has significantly shorter range but higher speeds
      2. Other routers within range broadcasting the same channels
      3. Solid matter especially thick materials and metal which disperses signals and acts like a faraday’s cage (prevents signals from passing through)
      4. Strong electromagnetic devices such as microwaves

Varies largely from carrier to carrier and depends heavily on the signal strength and speed push out as well as your device’s ability to receive and send signals.

Please note there are 2 know issues with softphones (this does not affect all services)

  1. iPhones – Most are set up to push out IPv6 (new standard of address)
  2. Telstra 5G pushes out IPv6 with proprietary and restricted traffic flow which may cause one way traffic, and other unusual behaviour, such as unable to answer incoming calls.

Please note that we can trial a few options to try and resolve this and it does only affect a select few customers however the issue does exist. 

Generally, phone traffic for a multiple phone setup only uses 1-3Mbps. So, for example you are on a 50 download / 20 upload plan, that will use 1-3 of the download (50) and 1-3 of the upload (20), it will happily run on 12/1 connection if traffic is not contested and stable.
