The switch from the old copper wire network to the NBN is possibly the most significant technological infrastructure development in the past 50 years.
It’s a big change.
And as the American author and leadership coach John Maxwell wrote, “Change is inevitable, progress is optional”.
I’d be the first to admit that I find change unsettling. The fear of the unknown starts playing on my mind. I guess it’s a normal reaction.
But as business people, we have an instinctive understanding of how important it is to adapt to change.
We recognise that fear can also be a good thing.
As the adrenaline kicks in you become more alert, not just to threats, but also to opportunities. It’s a natural survival instinct that helps keep us in business.
After all, the consequences of ignoring change are something we should fear even more. Anyone remember a company called Kodak?
Transitioning to the NBN
So the arrival of the NBN has probably thrown up questions in your mind. I know it’s got me wondering about a few things.
Like, what will this change mean for my business?
Or, how will we transition from the old network to the NBN?
Will there be downtime and other impacts on my business?
What happens if the change doesn’t work?
And these are just a few of the questions I’ve been pondering. And I’m sure you have plenty too.

Rest assured, we’re here to explain what the NBN means for your business and to support you through the transition.
So here are some answers to a few of the most common questions about the NBN. I hope this clears up some of the misconceptions that are floating around out there.
Can I still use my old internet connection?
No. The NBN will be your new source of internet for your business. It will replace your current ADSL copper wire service.
Do I need a new phone connection for business?
Yes. Once the NBN is connected to your premises, the old copper technology won’t work anymore. You’ll get new phone lines and make your phone calls over the internet.
Do I need a new phone system for business?
The good news is no. In most cases you’ll still be able to use your existing phone system for business using an adaptor.
Is there any benefit in a new phone system for your business?
Yes there is. You may want to consider upgrading to a new NBN-compatible system to take advantage of the extra features.
Firstly, an NBN ready phone system for business will give your customers better call quality. And it can ensure that you never miss another call. Now that’s got to be worth something to your business.
Then there’s the big cost savings on the calls themselves. In many cases the savings will offset the cost of a new system.
Can I use cloud-based solutions?
Yes. But it will depend on the type of your NBN connection you have and the speed it offers. Cloud-based solutions require constant high-quality business broadband internet speeds.
